Current status: Valid as Dactyloscopus crossotus Starks 1913. Dactyloscopidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Florida (U.S.A.) south to Santa Catarina (Brazil), including southeastern Gulf of Mexico and eastern Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2014): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.

Lectotype: CAS-SU 31. Paralectotypes: CAS-SU 67760 (1); USNM 44301-02 (1, 1), 126880 (1). Type catalog: Böhlke 1953:90 [ref. 12291], Springer & Orrell 1996:15 [ref. 22274]. Lectotype established by Jordan 1896:244 [ref. 2395]; see Dawson 1977:136 [ref. 1067].
